John's 7th Sign

John’s 7th Sign

The cross and resurrection of Jesus is John’s 7th and final sign. This sign is the crescendo of all the signs and points to the fact that Jesus is God because He is the Re-Creator.

John has been building to this point: Jesus is the Re-Creator therefore He is God.

John 19-20:18

1. The cross and resurrection reveal God’s glory

Signs are unvielers of Jesus.

They reveal something about who He is.

We have been learning that ultimately they show us Jesus is God.

But the 7th sign shows us what type of God He is:

The glory of someone is their personality their nature.

Moses wanted to know “What kind of a God are you?”

Not just ok with knowing He is God, we need to know His nature.

The backdrop of his question was that the God’s of annuity were gods of unpredictability. They were unhinged, unconcerned, and unpredictable.

I need to know if you are capable of getting us to the Promised Land because we are incapable of making on our own.

Moses means of discovering this is was to ask God to: Show me your glory.

God pulls down His veil and to Moses. God self identifies with us and through it reveals: “I am good.” I am this…

In the glory encounter He not only hears, he experiences the essence of God.

He revealed his character to Moses and his deeds to the people of Israel.

Psalm 103:7

The cross was the 7th sign.

The other signs were things Jesus DID that show us who He is.

1st The changing of water to wine was.

2nd Healing of the nobleman’s son at Capernaum (4:46–54).

3rd the paralysed man at the pool (5:1–9).

4th Loaves and fishes (6:1–14).

5th healing of the man born blind (9:1–12).

6th raising of Lazarus (11:1–44).

The cross is what God does that show us who He is.

“For God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.

John 3:16

Why’s this important?

Hebrews 11:6 He who comes to God must believe that He is and that he is the rewarder…

We access heaven by faith, but faith is not believing God is alive, or that He can do something, it is about believing what type of God He is.

A key trigger factor in faith is not just the believing THAT, but the believing God is…

I believe that God will heal…

I believe that He will do… do this, do that…

But rather…

I believe God is… God is good, God is kind, God is loving, God is Father.

2. Jesus death shows us that God is a in it with us, boots and all God.

John shows us that Jesus is in there at the beginning and at the end.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4

John 1:1-4

At the end [of the world] was the word Jesus is right there with His sleeves rolled up.

31 Now is the time for judgment on this world; now the prince of this world will be driven out.

Jesus is intimately involved with His creation and the care of it.

He delegated the stewardship of the earth to humanity, He did not give it and abandon it.

In fact the cross shows us that He is right in the midst of the mess bringing redemption.

He is prepared to fully identify with us. When Jesus is exclaims He is thirsty, John is making a greater point of Him being thirsty. Water is an important symbol in the story.

Jesus turned water to wine. The turning of water into wine shows us that God re-Creation is something far better.

28 Jesus knew that everything was now finished. Everything happened as the Holy Writings said it would happen. He said, “I am thirsty.”

John 19:38

Jesus gave living water to the Samaritan

Jesus said later they would never thirst

Here, on the cross, Jesus is desperately thirsty and He gets is low grade, sour wine, the stuff that low ranking soldiers drank whilst on duty.

Had the water of life failed? No, He had to come to the place where everyone else is, the place of thirst, shame and death.

The cross was Jesus’ (God’s) full identification with us.

On the cross Jesus takes on our sin

On the cross Jesus bares our shame

On the cross Jesus takes our Judgement

On the cross Jesus reveal’s His glory: I love with every facet of my being and hold nothing back.

We can often feel in the midst of the mess, where is God, He has abandoned us. If there is mess He is there.

The cross shows us that in our messes He is working to bring a beautiful picture.

The Cross says to us that He cares and He is stepping right into the middle of your mess. I am not only going to be with you in the mess I will work it right through with you now.
